Ep #4: Blood, Sweat & Tears
Hello and welcome! You're listening to the Byron English Podcast, your go-to resource for mastering the English language. Today we're going to tell a story of ambition and hard work.
The story begins with a young man called Jim. Now Jim was a guy everybody knew was going places. When you’re going places, it means you’re likely to be very successful. All of Jim’s friends knew he was going places, because when it came to studying, Jim always went the extra mile. He sacrificed weekends and parties, all so he could study for his exams. When you go the extra mile, it means you do what is necessary and more. When it came to studying Jim always went the extra mile.
“You need to relax Jim,” said his friends. “Forget about the books.” But Jim’s friends could never understand his one and only life goal. To own a Ferrari before his 21st birthday.
On his 18th birthday, Jim interviewed at the town’s biggest bank. The bank manager was impressed and he offered him a job. Jim was over the moon, which is another way of saying very, very happy. Jim was over the moon.
After two years of blood, sweat and tears, Jim had enough money for a Ferrari. Blood, sweat and tears is a fun expression we can use to say hard work. After two years of blood, sweat and tears, Jim had enough money for a Ferrari. He asked his boss if he could take the day off work to go and buy his dream car. “I’m afraid that’s not possible Jim,” said his boss. “Our organisation is 100% committed to helping the environment. You’ll have to buy an electric car like everyone else.”
Poor Jim. A sad end to the story, but at least his electric car will be better for the environment.
