Ep #3: Dog Eat Dog World

Hello and welcome! You're listening to the Byron English Podcast, your go-to resource for mastering the English language.

Today we're discussing the dog eat dog world we all live in.

When we say it’s a dog eat dog world we are talking about fierce competition where people are prepared to hurt or harm each other in order to succeed. If you grew up in a very rough neighbourhood, maybe life was always a big dog eat dog in your neck of the woods. There’s a nice expression, your neck of the woods. Your neck of the woods simply means the area you live in.

Do you know what else can be a bit dog eat dog? The corporate world. Of course, it depends what industry you work in, but when there’s a lot of money involved, it can be very dog eat dog. // The finance world can be extremely cutthroat, which is another way of saying dog eat dog. The finance world can be extremely cutthroat, there is no time for weakness. The world of professional football is also very cutthroat, with only a few people reaching the top. So, dog eat dog and cutthroat. Those are two ways of saying ruthless, fierce competition with no mercy.

Let’s imagine you work in one of these cutthroat environments. Maybe you have a job in real estate, selling houses. Selling houses can be quite dog eat dog. Your competition will do anything to succeed. Someone could even spread lies about you, and you could lose your clients. What would you do if that happened? Would you waste your time being angry and upset? Because you know it’s no good crying over spilt milk. That’s a very popular way of saying it’s a waste of time to be upset about something you can’t change. It’s no good crying over spilt milk.

Instead of crying over spilt milk, you can just decide to accept the fact that life is sometimes a dog eat dog world. Life is sometimes cutthroat. So don’t cry, instead plan your revenge. And everybody knows, revenge…..is a dish best served cold. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

That means revenge is better the more you wait for it and the more you plan it. Wow, this felt like a very negative episode.

That's a wrap for today's episode! Thank you for listening and don't forget to find us online at byronrome.com
