Ep #10: Do you have a sweet tooth?
Hello and welcome! You're listening to the Byron English Podcast, your go-to resource for mastering the English language. Today we're going to talk about having a sweet tooth.
If you're anything like me, you can eat an insane amount of chocolate in a short space of time. That’s because I have a sweet-tooth, which means I like sweet food. But I’m not being totally honest with you. To say I have a sweet-tooth is a bit of an understatement. I have a massive sweet-tooth. That’s right, we can say we have a sweet-tooth or we have a bit of a sweet-tooth, a huge sweet-tooth and so on.
I know a girl from London, who was once challenged to eat twenty-five cookies in under five minutes. She said that would be a piece of cake, which is an expression we use to say very easy. For example, that English exam was a piece of cake. Anway, this girl from London said that eating twenty-five cookies in under five minutes would be a piece of cake.
After she ate the twenty-five cookies in only four minutes, everyone was gobsmacked. Gobsmacked is another way of saying amazed. Gobsmacked. However, a few minutes later she started to feel a bit under the weather which is a very common expression we use to say we are feeling a bit sick. I’m feeling under the weather.
Then, an hour later she was sick as a dog. I don’t think I need to explain what being sick as a dog means do I? Okay, I’ll explain. If you’re feeling under the weather, you’re probably feeling a bit rough, a little bit unwell. If you’re sick as a dog….then that’s more serious. You’re in bed, you’re definitely not going to work, you’re staying in bed.
The good news is this story has a happy ending. The girl survived the whole ordeal and more importantly she won the challenge of eating twenty-five cookies in under five minutes. I think we can all agree, that’s a pretty impressive achievement. Then again, if you have a sweet-tooth a challenge like that is probably a piece of cake for you.
