Ep #6: Our Sedentary Lifestyle
Hello and welcome! You're listening to the Byron English Podcast, your go-to resource for mastering the English language. Today we're going to talk about our sedentary lifestyles.
Of course, we all live very different lives but one thing that we can probably agree on is that nowadays, the modern world lives a very sedentary lifestyle. The word sedentary is used to imply sitting down and not being very active. The perfect example of a sedentary lifestyle is the modern day office. Hundreds of people sitting down in front of a computer screen for 8 hours a day.
It’s not just the modern day office which is a problem, we also have a plethora of streaming services available to us, such as Netflix and Disney +. A plethora of, means a lot of. We have a plethora of streaming services available to us. This plethora of streaming services means we now spend a lot of our time binge watching TV series. When we binge watch something, it means that we watch the whole thing in a short period of time. In the past, before we had Netflix or before we have DVD’s, it was not possible to binge watch any TV show. Instead, we had to wait for a new episode to be released once a week.
So what is the result of all the comfort and luxuries we have today? The result is, we are creating a world of couch potatoes! A couch potato is probably what you are imagining. A couch potato is someone who sits down in front of the TV all day, eating junk food like cookies and crisps.
Some of my friends are couch potatoes and they often complain about being out of shape.
Being out of shape means that you are not very fit, you are not in very good physical condition, you are out of shape. I try to give these friends advice, simple pieces of advice like ‘go to the gym’ or ‘stop eating so much’ but honestly, it’s like talking to a brick wall. It’s like talking to a brick wall because they just don’t listen to me. My advice goes in one ear and out the other, it’s like talking to a brick wall.
So, the next time you find yourself on the sofa eating cookies and preparing to binge watch the new season of Stranger Things, just stop and ask yourself….. ‘Is this the best use of my time?’ Of course, Stranger Things is a great show, so in that situation it’s probably a fantastic use of your time.
That's a wrap for today's episode! Thank you for listening and don't forget to find us online at byronrome.com!
