Ep #2: The clock is Ticking

Hello and welcome! You're listening to the Byron English Podcast, your go-to resource for mastering the English language. Today we're discussing something serious…. We’ve only got a few minutes to learn some English together, so…. The clock is ticking. I cannot stress enough how important this podcast is.

You will notice that some of the phrases I say in this episode make things sound serious and important. The clock is ticking. This means we are under time pressure. We don’t have a lot of time.  I cannot stress enough how important this podcast is. That means this podcast is so important, that I can’t even describe how important it is. I cannot stress how important this podcast is.

Maybe you need some examples to help. Let’s imagine your English teacher is helping you to prepare for an exam. In class, he/she might say: “Okay everyone, the clock is ticking. The exam is in two days. I cannot stress enough how important it is to study your vocabulary and practice your speaking.

Another example might be at work. Maybe you work in an office, and you have an important deadline with your biggest client. In this situation, your boss might say: “Listen everybody, I cannot stress enough how important it is to finish the report before the deadline on Friday. I need all of you to focus on this, the clock is ticking.”

Okay, let’s move on to some new vocabulary. You have probably noticed the word ‘important’ in this episode. I think it is important to learn some synonyms for the word important! If you want to have better conversations in English, it is crucial to learn a wide range of vocabulary.

And there is our first synonym. Crucial. If you want to have better conversations in English, it is crucial to learn a wide range of vocabulary. Crucial means, very important. Another word you could use it vital.

“If you want to have better conversations in English, it is vital that you practice with a native speaker.” So there are two synonyms for the word important. Crucial and vital.

We’re going to finish this episode by using all of today’s vocabulary. Are you ready? I’m going to pretend to be your English teacher.

“Good morning class, I will be your teacher today. First of all, I want to remind you to be on time. It is vital that you come to class on time, because I will not wait for any late students. I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to be on time. Okay, we have a lot of work to do today. The clock is ticking, so let’s get started!”
