Communicate Effectively in Meetings and Calls

1 to 1 Calls - New Vocabulary

Dealing with calls can be difficult-in any language! You have to cope with language barriers, sound quality, difficult information or instructions to follow and possibly time limits. Using some useful phrases we can put you more in control to get what you want, as quick and easy as possible.

Verb: (to) clarify/clarified - To make clear or easier to understand. Noun: Clarification

“Can you please clarify what information you need?”
“I’m not 100% sure what to do, I need more clarification.


Verb: (to) verify/verified - To check that it (information) is true. Noun: Verification


“So you need me to send you the presentation by 5pm, can you verify that?”
“We could do with some verification, I’m not sure this information is true.”

Verb: (to) take down (notes) - To write down notes or information

“Let me grab a pen and take down the details, OK?”
“I haven’t taken down any notes during this training course. I hope I remember it all.”

Asking for clarification and extra information

  • Can/Could you clarify (what needs to be done)?

  • I'm sorry I didn't quite catch that, could you say it again?

  • I'm afraid I need a little more clarification

  • Could you confirm what I need to do?

Reviewing and verifying

  • Ok, let me recap things so far.

  • If I've understood you fully then...

  • Can I read/say that back to you to confirm?

  • Let me read that back to you.

Delaying tactics ☺

  • Could you repeat that please, the sound quality is pretty bad today?

  • I have some background noise, could you just go over that again?

  • Before you carry on, let me get a ....(pen)

  • Before you go any further, let me take down some notes.
